Earning Rewards

The American Express Blue Business Plus Card offers a straightforward earnings structure of 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on the first $50,000 per year and 1 Membership Reward point per dollar on spending once the $50,000 threshold is reached.

Redeeming Rewards

American Express Membership Rewards points are valuable because they are flexible. The points can be transferred to 17 airlines, most at a 1:1 ratio. In addition, American Express offers frequent transfer bonuses which allow you to get even more value out of your points. Among the most commonly used airline transfer partners are Delta (for Skyteam airlines), British Airways and Iberia Avios (OneWorld) and Air Canada Aeroplan (Star Alliance).

You can also redeem for a large variety of gift cards in travel, retail and restaurant categories. Rates vary depending on the vendor and fluctuate between 0.5 cents and 1 cent per point. You can also pay with points at a number of vendors, most notably Amazon at 0.7 cents per point. As you can see, you'll be better off paying your bill directly than redeeming for gift cards. The card also offers the ability to use points to wipe charges off of your bill, but at 0.6 cents per point, it's a terrible value.

Rewards Potential

It's very easy to calculate the rewards potential of the American Express Blue Business Plus Card. Since the card offers 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on the first $50,000 per year, we can assume that a business would spend that amount to max out the benefit. By doing so, the business could earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points per year. By transferring the points to a partner airline, your business could reasonably expect to earn enough miles to redeem them for four domestic round trip tickets on Delta, American or United.
